Herbert Lee Gums was born on August 17, 1950 to Louis Gums Sr. and Geraldine Rideaux in Sour Lake, Texas. After, briefly attending school in Nome, Texas he moved to Galveston, Texas. While, attending Goliad Junior High School he was awarded numerous awards from R.F. Sterling, R.B. Pope and W.B. Wynne. After, graduating from Ball High School class of 1969 he voluntary enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. While, serving in the United States Marine Corps, he received the following decorations, medals, badges, commendations, citations and campaign ribbons listed: National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Mast, Expert Rifle Shooting Badge and Marksman Pistol Shooting Badge. He was honorably discharge on July 25, 1975 as a Sergeant (E-5). In 1974, Herbert Gums married his junior high school sweetheart Emma Jones. To this union, they were blessed with three beautiful children: Derrick Dwight Jackson, LaShonda Shenette Grant, and Tiffanie Denise Phillips. In 1981, Herbert joined the Galveston Fire Department (this was his favorite job). At the Fire Department, he alongside his best friend Herbert Franklin and close friend Gilbert Robinson. This was Herbert’s favorite job. In 1991, he became employed with LyondellBassell. He worked there for over 25 years. Later, he joined Antioch Missionary Baptist Church where he served as an usher. He loved serving the Lord. Herbert was baptized at an early age at Jerusalem Baptist Church by the late Reverend A.S. Johnson. Upon moving to Houston, he joined Antioch Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Nathan Johnson. He loved serving the Lord and serving others as an usher in the house of the Lord. On Saturday, September 30, 2017, Herbert was called home to be with the Lord. He was preceded in death by his father, Louis Gums Sr., his mother, Geraldine Gums, and his brother Louis Gums Jr. Herbert’s memories will forever be cherished by those he loved and those who truly loved him: his lovely devoted wife,, Emma Jean Gums; son Derrick Dwight Jackson; daughters La Shonda Shenette Grant (David) and Tiffanie Denise Phillips; ten grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his pride and joy Cedric Dequency Phillips Jr.(grandson) and Kyla Denise Phillips (granddaughter); brother, Elton Ray Gums ; sister, Barbara Jean Rivers; two aunts, Myrtle May Rideaux and Mercie Lee Mayberry; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
