Born on March 31, 1934 in Chataignier, Louisiana, to Artelus Rougeau and Delphine Guillory, Herbert firmly believed in the promise of a good education and a strong work ethic. As a child, he worked in the cotton and rice fields to help support his parents. Too poor to attain a formal education, he taught himself to read and write. He could outperform the best of them when it came to world geography.
A sports fan at heart, he particularly enjoyed baseball and watching the Houston Astros. A few may be surprised to learn that Herbert owned a guitar, and at times, would pluck a string or two.
A class act and a true gentleman, Herbert always exuded style. He had a penchant for well-made suits and nice hats. As an adult, Herbert put his indomitable work ethic into practice at Forest Park Lawndale, where he worked for nearly 50 years and made many long-lasting friendships.
If you were blessed to have been in his presence, you know first-hand that Herbert was consistent in his noble character, had great love for his family, and was a man of deep faith. He was a lifelong member of Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church, where he served as an usher for many years.
He was married to the former Theresa Bellow; a union that lasted many years and produced three children. Although this union did not endure, the two remained friends.
Herbert is survived by his children, Rose Rougeau (Darien Cherry), Laura Vaughn (Willie), and Herbert P. Rougeau; grandchildren Kaze R. Cherry, Edrick Rougeau, Sharita Rougeau, Shuranda Rougeau, Willie Rougeau, Nakia Dickson (Brandon), Naeshia Burton, and Natoya Burton; a sister Bridgette Alexander (Houston, TX) and a brother Joseph Rougeau (Baton Rouge, La); nieces, nephews, great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by seven siblings Loretta Newport, Preston Semien, Jimmy Semien, Frank Rougeau, Stella Johnson,Charlie Rougeau, and Ella Mae Jackson.
In remembrance of Herbert, the family asks that you love yourself and your family! That’s what Herbert would have wanted.
Visitation will be held at 9 am, followed by the funeral service at 11 am, on December 29, 2016 at Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church (4000 Sumpter St.). Reverend Brian Fox, S.S.J. will be officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Park Lawndale (6900 Lawndale St.). Funeral arrangements are being handled by Forest Park Lawndale.
