Hilda Concepcion Moreno, 87, passed away in Houston, Texas on November 24, 2025. She was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador and was raised by loving parents, Gerardo and Maria Luisa Chavez, and had many happy memories. Life continued and Hilda grew up, fell in love and married Luis Alfonso Moreno. Luis was a merchant marine who eventually immigrated to the United States, and sent for Hilda and their two young children, Jorge and Martha. So in 1963, Houston, Texas became the home for the Moreno family.
When asked why she made the choice to come to America, she said because she sought a better life, especially for her children. She didn't know it then, but she would never see her mom again, she died of cancer several years later, and it would be many more years before she would be able to see her dad. It wouldn't be until adulthood that her children would understand the sacrifice their mother had made. Hilda came to a country not knowing the culture, the language, and with no family or friends for support. But it was always clear, Hilda left everything she knew behind in order to create a better future for her children..
In later years, Hilda became a single mom, and took the sole role of raising and supporting her now four children, Jorge, Martha, Marlene, and Sonnia. At times she took several jobs to provide for her family. She cleaned downtown offices, she cleaned private homes, she took care of children from other families, and eventually became a cashier in small shops. With the experience she received working in retail she was able to secure a job managing a small shop with the Patel family. Her boss was kind and treated her like family, and ultimately she stayed employed by the Patel's until her retirement.
As a family, the Moreno's did not have everything, financially there were struggles, but they always had what they needed. Hilda was a strong, proud woman, and a relentless mother. She taught her children to know and love God, and through example she taught them incredible work ethics, and the value of honesty and integrity. Her children will always say that who they are is a direct result of this lady from Ecuador. She was the foundation, the rock of the family. Life was difficult, but as a the family thrived. Nothing made Hilda happier than seeing her children succeed, personally and professionally. In the end, Hilda accomplished her mission. She gave her children that better life she had fought so hard to give them.
