Joan Marie Rowland, a cherished soul and a beacon of strength, concluded her remarkable journey of 89 years on Sunday, March 17. She was born into the loving arms of Amos and Marie (Wolfe) Warner on December 3, 1934, in Akron, Ohio. Joan was preceded in death by her siblings: Marilyn Alexander (and her late husband Bill), Carol Bortner (and her late husband Bob), John Warner (and his wife Betty), Tom Warner (and his wife Brenda Raup). She is survived by her siblings Joe Warner (and his wife Kaki) and Linda Pyles (and her husband Greg).
Joan’s childhood was woven with threads of resilience and unity, particularly during the challenging times of World War II when her family extended its warmth to as many as 15 relatives under a single roof. The era taught Joan the value of family, the essence of collaboration, as well as the ability to cook nearly anything from scratch, skills imparted by her mother that would later define aspects of her life.
Joan's pursuit of education was fueled by a blend of determination and self-reliance. She paid her own way through college, working full-time, which culminated in her graduation from the University of Texas with a Business Degree in 1954. Joan married Clifford Rowland in 1957, a union blessed with four children: Jennifer, Jill Smead (married to Sam), Clifford "Jack" (partner Paloma), and Matthew (married to Christy). Joan's legacy further blossomed with six grandchildren—Meghan, Samantha, Kirk, Zachary, Carter, and Sam—and seven great-grandchildren: Braydon, Brynnli, Bryce, Pierce, Tripp, Ellie, and Axel.
Joan's life evolved from nurturing a young family through oil patch towns of Texas to rewriting her destiny as the founder of Joan Marie Interiors after parting ways with Clifford in 1982. Her entrepreneurial journey was marked by determination and excellence, earning her widespread respect and numerous accolades in the world of interior design. Joan's passion for her work and the deep bonds she formed with her clients reflected her unwavering commitment to professionalism and style.
Throughout her life, Joan stood as a testament to grit, determination, and the profound impact of love and hard work. Her roles as a mother, wife, sister, and entrepreneur were played with unparalleled grace and strength, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
As we bid farewell to Joan Marie Rowland, a private service to celebrate her extraordinary life will be held at the home of Matthew & Christy Rowland on March 23. In lieu of flowers, we encourage you to honor Joan's memory by spreading love in your own way—be it through sending flowers to someone special or donating to a charity close to your heart.
