Joe grew up in Gonzales, Louisiana where he enjoyed fishing and hunting in the swamps behind his family’s home where he acquired his outdoorsmen skills which he passed on to his nephew, Christopher Coroy. To help make ends meet during the Depression, Joe caught and sold poisonous snakes to a local veterinarian for use for anti-venom. Unfortunately he didn’t escape the many bites from these dangerous snakes as he often joked. Joe frequently swam across the Mississippi River risking the dangerous currents. He joked about the time he swam across the river and ended up about a mile and a half downstream as he reached the other side.
Those swimming skills helped Joe as a Seabee in the Navy during WWII. He also joined the Construction Underwater Battalion and volunteered in the Underwater Demolition Team, UDT’s, number 7. He participated in the invasion of Okinawa and returned home after the war ended where he followed his future wife, Charlie, to Houston where they married.
Upon his discharge from the Navy, he worked in the oil field industry, repairing pumping units and drilling rigs. Over the years in his career, he enjoyed the friendship of lifelong friends at companies such as National Supply Company, Armco Steel, AK Steel, Pride Drilling, Waters International and others.
In retirement, he enjoyed hunting with his best friend Buck Freeman and socializing with fellow vets at the American Legion and VFW.
Joe’s family would like to express their gratitude to his numerous friends for their friendship, kindness, support and love for him over the years.
