On February 8, 1942, Katie Bernice Marshall was born is Smithville, Texas to Eddie and Katie Marshall. She was the fifth of nine children born to this union. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Gospel Temple Baptist Church in Smithville, Texas.
She attended Mary A. Brown where she studied hard and graduated with honors in 1960. Katie started college at Prairie View Nursing School. She knew as a young adult her purpose in life was to help others in need of care. She finished her studies at Methodist Nursing School with an Associate degree, Vocational Nursing in 1961. She had a long career as a LVN touching many lives through her compassion, care and service of nursing home residents. In the later part of her career, she worked at St. Luke’s Hospital until she retired in 2006.
In 1965, she married Walter Gay Jr. From this union, on December 16, 1965, one son, Walter Gay was born and on February 11, 1971, one daughter, Madelene Gay was born.
She attended several churches in Houston. Her final church home was Mt. Zion Baptist Church where she served faithfully through Sunday School, Bible Study and Choir. She was an active member of the Pathfinders.
Katie loved to sing, play the piano, travel and spend quality time with family and friends.
As her health began to fail in 2015, her spirit and faith grew stronger even to the end. She departed this life on May 5, 2021.
She was preceded in death by her parents Eddie and Katie Marshall, two sisters Eddie Ruth Marshall and Shirley Ann Newman, two brothers Edward Lawrence Marshall and Ernest Louis Marshall, and her spouse Walter Gay Jr.
She is survived by her loving and devoted son, Walter Gay III (Michelle), daughter Madelene Williams (David), three sisters, Irene Braxton, Alberta Jackson, Essie Jefferson and one brother John Marshall (Audrey) all of Houston, Texas. Grandchildren: Ra’Van Williams, Andrew Williams, Andrea Perkins (Antonio), David Williams Jr., Megan Lewis and Great Grandchild: Harrison Mosley. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
