Maggie Mae Carter-Washington was born in Wortham, Texas on April 2, 1927, the third child of Lawrence and Bettie Carter. The family owned a farm (331/2 acres) and had everything they needed. She attended Rocky Branch Elementary and High School. At the age of 8 she joined and was baptized at Rocky Branch Baptist Church. Maggie remained a member until she moved to Houston, Texas in 1946. She joined New Hope Baptist Church on Crocket street under the leadership of Pastor M. M. Pierson until his passing. Maggie later joined the Greater Galilee Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. R.M. Shepherd and remained a faithful member under Pastor Mack A. Paul until her death. On February 8, 1946, Maggie and James Washington II were joined in holy matrimony. James and Maggie were blessed with 65 years of marriage and remained married until Maggie's death. Maggie was the mother of 11 children, whom she was very proud of and loved dearly. Countless family memories were created on Maury Street, where James and Maggie raised their children. After many years of hard work, Maggie retired from Marathon Oil Company in 1984. During her younger years, she worked as a security guard and managed two service stations. She had a passion for cooking, flowers, and gardening. While being kind and loving, Maggie was a strong and assertive woman, who demonstrated her unwavering strength to her family and friends until the Lord called her home.
