Maria Antonia Valdez Olguin, 79, of Houston, Texas, passed January 11, 2021. Antonia was born to Nicanor “Nico" Valdez and Eduarda “Lala” Loredo, January 17, 1941, in Palaú, Mexico. She married Ben M. Olguin in 1964, and together they raised three sons: Benny, Anthony, and Adrian.
She is survived by her son Ben V. Olguin and his wife Bernadette Andrea and grandson Ross Anthony Andrea; son Anthony V. Olguin and granddaughter Ashley Ariel Olguin and a great granddaughter; and son Adrian V. Olguin. She also leaves to cherish her memory nieces and nephews Pascual Valdez, Jr., Laura Ann Valdez, Deanna Valdez (d.2019), Debra Jean Valdez, Stephanie Marie Valdez, Esmeralda Porras, Sonya Porras, Alfred Porras, Jr., Edward Porras, Lisa Carol Valdez, Gina Renee Valdez, John Eric Valdez (d. 1981), Enrique Valdez, Rosa Valdez, Ester Valdez, Jorge Valdez, Dora Valdez, Felipe Loredo, Gustavo Valdez Ruiz, and all their children, grandchildren, and families.
She was preceded in death by Ben M. Olguin in 2020, her sister Lucy Valdez Porras in 2020, and her four brothers, Juan L Valdez in 2009, Enrique Valdez in 2015, Nicanor L Valdez in 2017 and Pascual L Valdez in 2020. Antonia dedicated her life to her children and family, and was the primary care giver for her mother “Lala” for many years. Due to a childhood illness, Antonia was not able to complete school, which she loved. But she was an avid life-long reader and taught her sons to read and imparted a love of literature and learning. Her sons Anthony and Adrian all graduated high school and are expert chefs. Her eldest son Benny is a Ph.D. graduate of Stanford University and now a university professor of literature at the University of California at Santa Barbara.
A celebration of her life and viewing is scheduled for Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at 9:00 a.m., followed by burial at 10:00 a.m., at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home and Cemetery, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, Texas 77023.
