Melvin lived and worked on his parents’ ranch in Hondo, Texas, where he learned the value of hard work. He worked as a bookkeeper at Texas A & I University where he also attended and graduated. He served in the Army Air Force in the supplies division and worked at Houston Natural Gas for many years, where he retired. He married Thelma Holmes in 1957.
Melvin was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, along with Thelma, for over 50 years. He was involved in his community, where he and Thelma volunteered at their local civic club. He enjoyed golfing, loved to garden and would share his harvest with neighbors, even squirrels. He was outgoing, loved people, and had a great sense of humor. He loved to eat, especially ice cream. He was a loving grandfather to his four grandchildren, often traveling to West Virginia to spend time with them when they were growing up. He was a wonderful grandfather to their spouses and children as well. His kindness, generosity, and positive attitude will live on in our hearts forever.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Thelma Schulte, parents, Robert and Mary Schulte, his son, Tom, and brother, Robert. Left to cherish his memory are his daughter-in-law, Patricia Holmes, his grandchildren, Beth Harrison and husband, Charlie of Charleston, Deborah Martinez and husband, John of Pearland, Trish Croteau and husband, Mike of Ottawa, and Tom Holmes and wife, Robin of Alvin. He will also be greatly missed by his great-grandchildren, family, and friends.
