David grew up in Indianapolis, where he attended St. Joan of Arc and then Broadripple High School. It was at St. Joan od Arc where he met his lifelong friends, Paul Connolly, Frank Cromis, and Chic Perrin, with whom he remained in contact with his whole life. He attended IU and was a draftsman for several builders in the Indianapolis area.
David played many sports, but his love was hockey. He met his first wife, Rosa Lee Swan, at the ice rink. They were married 28 years and had three children, Teresa, Terry, and Tim.
In 1967, he moved to Houston, Texas to attend the University of Houston to become an art teacher. After graduation, he went to work for the High School for Performing and Visual Arts. This school was his life for 41 years, and the last 29 years, he shared with his second wife Eileen Montgomery. They were together for 32 years before her death in 2021.
David enjoyed cooking, wine tasting, traveling, collecting and creating art. He also enjoyed poker, sports, and fishing. During Eileen's illness, he discovered the joy of expressing himself through poetry. In his last few years, he loved hanging out and “supervising” Teresa and his great grandkids while they worked in the garden and studio.
David leaves behind his daughter Teresa Dafft; sons Terry and Tim Sheard; granddaughter Jennifer Bailey and her husband Bill; grandsons Aloha and Kaiha Sheard of Japan; great-grandchildren Jackson, Christian, Julianne, Clayton, and Jasmine Bailey; brother-in-law George Montgomery. He also leaves behind numerous friends, colleagues, and former students whose lives he touched.
He is preceded in death by his wife Eileen Montgomery; grandson Travis Dafft and his beloved dogs.
In lieu of flowers, there is a Eileen Montgomery-David Sheard scholarship fund thru HSPVA friends.
