November 23, 1927 – November 30, 2020
The Jacinto City community lost one its former longtime residents this past Monday when Mildred Ann Walker Cureton passed away at the age of 93 in Kingwood.
She and her late husband Hollis were fixtures on Lane Street for many years as their spacious home sat on the opposite side of the street from the many apartment complexes that they owned and managed in Jacinto City. Back in the day, following marriage, many young Galena Park classmate couples began their lives together as they resided at one of their complexes which included the Pin Oak, Switzer, Shadow Lane and Holly B apartments.
Mildred Ann was the mom of our own GP Class of 1970 Sandra Cureton Hayter and her older sister Sylvia Cureton Slaughter of the Class of ’67. She was known as “Mamaw” to her grand and great-grandchildren.
She was a very vibrant, loving and influential Matriarch of a strong and successful Cureton family. Mildred Ann loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing and traveling. She was never one to avoid the limelight as she entertained her family and friends playing the piano by ear.
Ms. Cureton was an "Avid Sports Fanatic”… the Rockets, Astros and Texans were her favorites but she would watch any game over regular TV any day. With the elimination of fans at Major League Baseball games due to Covid-19 restrictions this year; Grandsons Ronnie & Johnny purchased cardboard cutouts of the three of them that occupied seats at Minute Maid Park this past season.
Mildred Ann practiced her Christian faith at First Baptist Churches of Jacinto City and Galena Park before moving to Kingwood a few years ago and then attended Kingwood Presbyterian.
She was a member of Eastern Star and member and past president of Beta Signa Phi. Mildred was also a Garden Club member and past president.
Grand daughter Jennifer summed up her Mamaw with these words she posted on her Facebook page Monday evening…
“Well today Heaven gained a spunky angel. MILDRED ANN CURETON. She’s howled at the moon atop a grand piano, she’s sang the milk cow blues, traveled the world, killed many a deer and wet many a fish hook. She is like no other. She loved her family with a fierceness few could understand. And though she was a handful, she was OURS and we will miss her deeply. Thank you for the memories Mamaw. Love you.”
What a great testament to a life fully lived…
Mildred Ann was born to Madison “Doc” and Mildred Walker in Baytown, Texas on November 23, 1927. She married Hollis Cureton on January 10, 1945.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hollis Cureton and her parents and her sons in law Dane Slaughter and Jack Hayter.
Ms. Cureton is survived by her two daughters, Sylvia Slaughter and Sandra Hayter of Canyon Lake and Kingwood and Charlie Cunningham of Canyon Lake. Grandchildren Jennifer and husband James Blunt, Ronnie and Lyn Slaughter, Johnny and Debra Slaughter. Great-Grandchildren Steele, Storrey, and Stone Slaughter and Ashlee and Barrett Calverley, and Austin and Ashley Polley, Grayson Blunt and four Great Great-Grandchildren.
As described by her family - She will be dearly missed for her “words of wisdom”.
Visitation will be on Friday, December 4, 2020 at 9:00 AM at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home with Graveside Service at 10:00 AM at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.
