Modesta Carlotta Rojas passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, July 27, 2013 surrounded by family. She is predeceased by her daughter Anna Rojas Infante, her husband Joe Rojas and survived by her 4 children, Martha Ochoa, Joe Rojas, Gloria Harrison and Terry Nunez all from Houston, Texas. Modesta was born November 4, 1929, sharing the same birthday with her granddaughter Jackie Marie Campise (a.k.a. Jackie Blue) and many wonderful birthdays were celebrated together. Modesta was born and raised in Houston, Texas where she was the youngest of 10 children with her oldest sibling still alive and well at the young age of 93. Her parents Antonia and Gil Soto raised their children on the east side of Houston in a small neighborhood of Magnolia. Modesta attended catholic school at Immaculate Heart of Mary and she carried this strong faith with her throughout her life. Though she lost her husband at the age of 32 and was left a widow with 5 children, her faith and love of her family helped her sustain this tragedy. Her love of family was her main focus in life, she never remarried and was happy just being with her children and grandchildren. She leaves behind 14 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren. Modesta loved music and dancing, she performed the traditional folkloric dance as a young girl at various school and church festivals. Her love of music helped her during her cancer treatments and would often ask to listen to music to sooth her and cheer her up. Modesta always had a love for dressing up and always liked to go shopping for pretty shoes and clothes. She remembers as a young girl working at the tailor shop to sew buttons on the soldier’s uniforms during World War II. Often the tailors would make her beautiful suits and dresses from the left over material. She retired in 2000 from the City of Houston and enjoyed spending her retirement days with her family. A special thanks to all the caregivers who took such good care of her during her illness; Olga Gonzales, Yolanda Charles, the staff at Comfort Keepers especially Joetta and Sherrill, her oncologist doctor; Dr Sandra Hatch and primary Dr. Kudmenetsky plus many other devoted friends Maria, Nellie, Cynthia, Stephanie and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
