

Rafael P. Saenz Jr., lovingly known as “Bright Eyes,” passed away peacefully on February 22, 2026, at the age of 74. Born on January 4, 1952, in Houston, TX Rafael was a lifelong resident of Segundo Barrio, where he built a life rich in love, family, music, and community.
Rafael lived life to the fullest and embraced everything the world had to offer. He had a deep love for dancing and music, and he never missed an opportunity to celebrate, especially when surrounded by family. Whether at gatherings filled with laughter or simply enjoying the rhythm of his favorite songs, Rafael’s spirit was vibrant and full of joy. His nickname, “Bright Eyes,” perfectly captured the warmth and light he carried throughout his life.
He is survived by his beloved son, Rafael L. Saenz III and wife Josephine; his five cherished grandchildren: Luis D. Valle-Saenz, Rafael L. Saenz Jr. and wife Karla, Samantha L. Saenz, Brandon L. Saenz, and Ianna L. Saenz; and his four treasured great-grandchildren: Tatiana, Eloisa, Mary, and Jordan. He is also survived by his brother, Jose L. Saenz Sr., and sister-in-law, Mary Saenz.
Rafael was preceded in death by his loving mother, Bernabe P. Saenz Treviño; his father, Jose Rafael Saenz; his brothers, David Saenz and Noe Saenz; and his sisters-in-law, Victoria and Brenda.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to his caregiver, who became a dear friend, Amanda Hembree, for her unwavering care, compassion, and presence by his side until the very end.
Rafael’s legacy lives on in the stories shared, the music that plays, the dances at family celebrations, and in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered for the love, laughter, and light he brought into this world.
