Robert Bruce Strickler was born January 29, 1953 at St. Joseph’s hospital in Houston, Texas to Clarence “Buck'' and Nelcine Strickler. His mother Nelcine often said he was the best baby she had. He died peacefully at home on December 30, 2021.
Bob was beloved to everyone who knew him. He was kind and loyal and funny. He was a friend to everyone he met and never said a negative word about anyone. He was principled and hard working, just and fair. He was always able to give the benefit of the doubt and able to bring out the best in others. He was optimistic and tender-hearted, innately good and at peace with the world.
Bob was also: a dutiful son, a fiercely loyal brother, a devoted husband, a patient and playful father, a proud grandfather, a true and steady friend, everybody’s favorite everything; an Astros fan, a Cougars fan, a Texans fan, a Rockets fan, a Marcus Johnson mega-fan; an honored guest at the kids' table; an enthusiastic laugher and excellent television watching companion; treehouse builder and treasure map cartographer extraordinaire; wade fisherman, deer and dove hunter; smoked turkey and beef ribs aficionado; Busch Light tall boy drinker and Camels smoker; Galveston Beach and French Quarter vacationer; smart and well read, up to date on wide ranging subjects from politics to sports to pop culture and able to answer any questions you had about plumbing or honey bees or anything else you didn’t know the answer to; keeper of magic tricks, able to make his thumb disappear; the kind of uncle who brought the best water gun to the pool; avid photographer; terrible but consistent pretender of moonwalking; encouraging and supportive mentor; writer of tender emails and texts; teacher of questionable Spanish phrases to young and impressionable nephews; altar boy at Queen of Peace Church; defender of the bullied; prankster; and never a complainer.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents Buck and Nelcine Strickler and his brother Donald Strickler. He leaves behind his wife of 46 years Kathleen Byrne Strickler, daughter Sarah Strickler Stone, son-in-law Jeremy Stone, grandson Theodore Stone, brother Thomas Strickler, sister Jeanne Steed, sisters-in-law Kareen Strickler and Carol Strickler and, brother- in-law Raymond Steed. Also so many nieces and nephews, so many friends, so many cousins.
When you're missing Bob and the way he made you laugh, just pull out your wallet and ask your waitress if she can make change for a million as you hand her your fake million dollar bill. And then before she knows how to react, ask her if she accepts a two-party out of state check. And know that “every day’s a gift.”
