Ruth attended the University of Houston and Rice University and in 1943 married Rev. Harry N. Holmes, a minister at St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Houston. She was active as a minister’s wife, leading Sunday school classes and women’s Bible study groups as well as singing in the choir.
After raising a family, in 1968 she began working as a secretary for various organizations. She was particularly proud of her work as an executive secretary at Procter & Gamble and retired from there in 1990.
Ruth loved to attend the opera and the ballet and to visit art museums. She volunteered as an usher at the Jones Hall for the Performing Arts in Houston. She loved singing and won several music awards in school.
Ruth enjoyed dancing, whether it was country two-step or ballroom, and organized a group of retired women, the Blue Belles, to perform dance routines for residents at assisted living facilities throughout the city. In addition, she taught exercise classes for seniors and the AARP safe driving course at the Tracy Gee Community Center in Houston.
In 2006, she moved to Fort Collins, CO, to be closer to her daughter. She volunteered at the visitors’ information desk at Poudre Valley Hospital and at the Fort Collins Senior Center. In 2021, she returned to Houston to be near her son and several family members.
Ruth loved dining out and traveling abroad, and always had a zest for life that kept her young at heart through her 100th birthday - which she celebrated with a party that included family members from all over the country.
