

Mary was born on February 28, 1937, in Cullman, Alabama. She dedicated her life to caring for others and was known throughout her community for her compassionate heart and selfless spirit. As a self-employed in-home caregiver, Mary lovingly cared for elderly individuals well into her 80s, continuing her work until the age of 83. Caring for others was not just her profession, but her calling.
Mary was once a beauty queen whose grace and warmth left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She had a special love for hummingbirds and found great joy in watching them and collecting all things with hummingbirds. Above all else, Mary treasured her family. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who gave unconditional love and support to those around her. Following the passing of her son Edward, Mary lovingly stepped in to help raise two of her grandchildren, a testament to her strength and dedication to family.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary McDonald; her son, Edward Irons; her sister, Barbara Steele; and her brothers, William McDonald, Joseph McDonald, David McDonald, James Weaver, Gene Weaver, and Robert Ziegler.
Mary is survived by her children, Clifford Irons, Greg Smith, and Tammy Smith; her sister, Florene Parker; her brother, Herman (Nancy) Weaver; her grandchildren, Dana, Kelly, and Krystal; and her eight great-grandchildren, Anna, Taylor, Riley, Cora, Ava, James, Carter, and Charlotte. She also leaves behind many extended family members and friends who will deeply miss her loving presence.
Services for Mary Ellen Ballmer will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at Valhalla Funeral Home, 698 Winchester Road NE, Huntsville, Alabama 35811. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM, with the funeral service beginning at 3:00 PM. She will be laid to rest immediately following the service at Valhalla Memory Gardens.
Mary’s kindness, resilience, and unwavering love for her family will forever be remembered by all who knew her.
