Mary “Jean” York, 92, of Huntsville, Alabama passed away on Thursday, September 29, 2022, after her courageous fight against dementia. Jean was born on February 8, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois to Evelyn and Orville Bass.
Jean is proceeded in death by her parents, Evelyn and Orville Bass; Kenneth Murray, first husband of 23 years and father to her 5 children; her beloved husband, Ottman York, of 39 years; her son, Kenneth Murray, Jr.; her daughter, Elizabeth Thompson; her grandson, Raymond Hamilton; and great granddaughter, Kristin Hamilton, all of Huntsville, Alabama.
Jean is survived by her daughter Anita Hill, of Dothan, Alabama; daughter Toni Smyly, husband, Todd, of Little Rock, Arkansas; son David Murray, wife Tina, of Tampa, Florida; ten grandchildren Misti, Jason, Crista, Jeff, Annie, Ben, Lindsay, Drew, Corey and Jessica as well as a host of great-grandchildren, extended family members and wonderful friends.
Jean was strong, fierce, loyal and loving in her 92 years. She loved to decorate and paint along with her personal craftsman, Ottman. Often you could find her either working along beside him in his workshop, or sunbathing by the pool. Jean enjoyed being with her family and friends and was very dedicated to her church Trinity Methodist. Jean also enjoyed golf and was an avid Tiger Woods fan.
A visitation will be held Friday, October 14, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Valhalla Funeral Home on Winchester Road. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 15, at 3:00pm also at Valhalla Funeral Home.
