Sergeant First Class Matthew Owen Jones, U.S. Army (Retired), age 78, of Huntsville, Alabama passed away on February 2, 2026. Born in Farmers, Kentucky on February 17, 1947, Matthew met and married the love of his life, Margaret Ann Jones, in Maine. Matthew and Margaret were happily married for over 50 years. Matthew’s military career took their family to various locations throughout their lives, including Germany, Missouri, and Texas. In 1980, Huntsville became the place that they called home.
Matthew proudly served his country for over 20 years, including two tours in Vietnam. He was known for his dedication to duty and his hard work ethic. He was recognized for his honorable service with a Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. Additionally, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal for his distinguished and faithful service. During his station at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama, Matthew served as an instructor who trained servicemen with missile defense systems and maintenance procedures.
Matthew was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Although he was a man of few words, his quick wit often brought a smile to the faces of those around him.
Matthew showed kindness through selfless acts of service to his family, neighbors, and even strangers he met. His acts of kindness and generosity were his favorite way of showing others the love of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Matthew is survived by his son Gregory Joseph Jones, his daughter-in-law Kimberly Watson Jones, and his grandson Garrett Matthew Jones, all of whom reside in Birmingham, AL. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Jones; his parents, Roy and Mary Jones; and his siblings Cathy Jones, Barbara Jones, and Roy Jones.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, March 28 at 2:00 pm at Valhalla Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Valley Fellowship Church.
