Thomas was a proud United States Marine who served his country during the Vietnam War. His service was a defining part of who he was—he was truly a Marine through and through.
He was a man of many passions and a generous spirit. Thomas loved music and movies and built an extensive collection over the years. He enjoyed everything from classic favorites to obscure westerns and hidden gems. Thomas was a talented musician who had a natural gift for playing stringed instruments, especially the bass guitar. Though he never read music, he played with remarkable skill and heart.
Earlier in life, Thomas also enjoyed spending time on the golf course and at the bowling alley, and he was an avid fan of NFL football— though he never tied himself to just one team. He had a deep love for motorcycles and was especially fond of Harley-Davidsons.
Above all, Thomas was a devoted family man. He was an active and engaged father, deeply involved in his son’s life through school events, youth sports, the Optimist Club, PTA, and many other activities. He carried that same love into his role as a grandfather, cherishing every moment with his grandsons, Marshall and AJ.
Thomas was known for his kindness and generosity—he would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. His strength, humor, and unwavering love for his family will be deeply missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tommy and Edith Wharton; his brother, Kenneth Wharton; his sister, Tiny Wharton; and his daughter, Kimberly.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joy L. Wharton; his son, Brian (Crystelyn) Wharton; and his beloved grandsons, Marshall and AJ.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 23, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM at Valhalla Funeral Home and Memory Gardens, 698 Winchester Road NE, Huntsville, Alabama 35811. A military committal service will follow.
