Anne Amelia Born (nee Fleck), 100, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully in the presence of several of her children on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, after a short illness. A native of Jasper, Indiana, she was a resident of Indianapolis for the past 76 years. Anne was born on December 7, 1924, the youngest child of John and Frederica Fleck. She graduated from Jasper High School and held various secretarial positions in Dayton, Ohio and Evansville, Indiana during World War II and the immediate postwar years. It was in Evansville where she met James Born, who would become her husband of 67 years until his death in 2014. After raising nine children, she was a teacher’s aide at the Indiana Blind School for seventeen years, retiring in 1991. She then volunteered at St. Vincent’s Hospital until she was well into her nineties and the pandemic forced the suspension of the volunteer program. She was a longtime parishioner of St. Luke Catholic Church.
Anne was known for her frugality, her love of walking, and above all for her devotion to her children and many grandchildren. When informed of her passing, a granddaughter said that she knew she was walking her laps in heaven. She also loved to play cards and games, and was not above, shall we say, enhancing her chances of success.
Anne was preceded in death by her husband, James Born, her parents, John and Frederica Fleck, and her siblings Joseph Fleck, Laura Rasche, Theresa Hoffman, Ray Fleck, Lenore Horstmeyer, Elvera Gress, Clarence Fleck, Marie Fleck, and Dennis Fleck. She is survived by her children Joseph Born (Robin), Charlotte Cake (Dennis), Thomas Born (Catherine), Marilyn Osburn (Terence), Bradley Born (Christine), James Born II, Barbara Pankow (Gregory), Lawrence Born (Elizabeth), and Carol Wells (Theodore), and by 26 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at Leppert Mortuary - Nora Chapel, 740 E. 86th St., Indianapolis from 5-7 PM on Monday, September 1st and for an hour before the funeral Mass. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:30 AM on Tuesday, September 2nd at St. Luke Catholic Church, 7575 Holliday Drive East, and burial at 1 PM at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, 9001 Haverstick Road, Indianapolis. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Helen’s Pink Sky Foundation, St. Luke Catholic Church, or Miracle Place, Indianapolis.
