Thomas “Tom” Christopher Carr, 66, departed this life Monday, August 12, 2024, at his home. Tom was born on March 11, 1958, in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Lawrence S. and Marguerite (Ham) Carr. Tom’s smile lit up a room, especially around loved ones, and he will be deeply missed by his family.
He spent his childhood and schooling years on the North side of Indy and was a 1976 graduate of North Central High School. Tom earned his degree in Construction Management at Purdue University, which led to a long and fulfilling career as a Project Engineer. He worked for several commercial real estate and construction companies throughout in his career, his most enjoyed and longest tenured being Harman International.
His position at Harman allowed him to travel to each corner of the world, exploring big cities and nature and everything in between. He was proud to share his hard-earned frequent flier awards with his family for memorable vacations to favorite places like Hawai’i, Hilton Head Island, and Italy.
Tom loved everything about nature: landscapes, forests, beaches, hiking, birdwatching, gardening. He felt most at peace in nature. He became a Master Naturalist for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, where he volunteered at Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park and the Indiana State Fair regularly.
Tom was an avid Formula 1 and IndyCar fan. He enjoyed countless races, loving the noise, dirt, speed, and smell of performance. He attended nearly all Indianapolis 500 races, from childhood with his brother, to adulthood with his daughters. He was an accomplished model car builder and amassed quite the collection of built and unbuilt racecars he took pride in displaying in his home. He adored his deep red 1975 Triumph TR-6 that he cherished driving, taking care of, and showing off at vintage car shows.
Tom achieved the distinction of Eagle Scout in 1973 and was proud to hold that title and passion his whole life. He served a Peace Corps Response Assignment in Fiji during the 1980s. He also enjoyed attending the symphony, spending hours meandering through art museums, cooking and dining at fine restaurants, and learning about history through travel, reading, and informational shows. Most of all, Tom’s top priority and biggest love was his daughters.
Tom is survived by his devoted daughters, Megan Carr and Emily Carr; his older siblings, Stephen (Barbara) Carr, Kathy Carr, and Charlotte (John) Watson; his friend and former wife, Diane Carr; his cat Biscuit; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Celebration of Life and reception for Tom will be Saturday, October 26, 2024, at Fort Harrison State Park, Cherry Tree shelter at one o’clock.
