Hawley, Alex Angus, Age 96, passed away on Tuesday,June19, 2018 in Inverary Manor, Inverness, surrounded by his wife and friends. Alex was born in Inverness on May 3, 1923 and was a son of the late John and Christine (Gillis) Hawley.
Alex was a member of St Peter’s parish, Port Hood and was a member of Captain Angus L MacDonald legion Branch 132, Inverness and was the last surviving member of his family. He left home at an early age and moved to Sydney where he was employed at the steel plant.
It was war time, so when Alex became of age, he enlisted in The Canadian Army during the Second World War. He served overseas in England, France, Belgium, Italy and Holland, and was wounded twice, recovered and remained there until the end of the war. When he returned home, he worked in Port Hood and Antigonish area before moving to Hamilton, Ontario, where he married and brought up his family.
Alex worked 32 years for Stelco Steel. Alex and his wife, Eileen, returned to Port Hood in 1986 and enjoyed a happy and busy retirement. For the last 2 years, Alex was a resident of the Inverary Manor, Inverness.
Survived by his wife, Eileen; sons, John Hawley, Stephen (Barb) and Edward Kinsella; daughter, Christine (Gary) Ashthrop, Marilyn (David) Stevenson; sister, Diana Spears
Alex is predeceased by daughters, Debbie and Sandra; brothers, Douglas, Jack, Neil, Donald; sisters, Isabele and Sadie.
Visitation will be held in Port Hood and Area Resting Place on Sunday June 24th, from 2-7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday at 11 a.m., in St Peter’s Church with Father Vincent vanZutphen officiating.
Burial in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Canadian Cancer Society or to The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
