February 6, 1950 - February 18, 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alexander Joseph MacDonald, famously known to many as Joe 90, on February 18, 2025, at the age of 75.
Joe was born on February 6, 1950, and spent his life serving his community in extraordinary ways. His dedication to others began in 1972 when he became a paramedic, a career he was deeply passionate about. He was awarded the Exemplary Service Award from the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia for his 47 years of service, which included a Long-Standing Service Award after 45 years of service. He retired from his role as a paramedic in 2019, but his commitment to helping others did not end there.
Joe also served as a volunteer firefighter for 47 years, retiring in 2023 after being awarded Exemplary Service Award and a Long-Standing Service Award for 45 years of dedication. During his time as a firefighter, he served 5 years as the Fire Chief. His dedication to both the paramedic and fire services is a testament to his love for his community and his desire to help in any way he could.
In addition to his emergency service work, Joe was also a member of the CB Club for many years, serving as president and other executive positions. He was also a dedicated blood donor, receiving multiple accolades for his consistent commitment to the cause.
Joe loved the beach and his motorcycle, but most of all, he cherished his walks with Brady, Tessa, Rossi, and his beloved dogs -- Brea (predeceased), Ainslie, and Allie – all of whom brought him great joy. His friendly nature and willingness to stop and chat with anyone often led to a funny story or two, especially about his encounters with tourists. Joe was a quiet, humble man who enjoyed sharing a laugh and always had time for a good conversation or perhaps a game of crib. His love for the Toronto Maple Leafs was as unwavering as was his love for his family and friends.
Joe shared 51 wonderful years with his wife, Reine Anne. He adored his children; son, Randy MacDonald (Leigh-Ann); and daughter, Taryn MacDonald (Dan), and was proud of the family they built together. Joe had a special bond with his son-in-law, Dan, sharing a deep connection of mutual interests and a great love for laughter.
Joe is also survived by his brother, Charlie Dan (Christy), whom he not only looked up to but would have done anything for; his sister, Karen Hirtle, who always knew she could count on him; and his younger brother, Larry (Kim), who he loved dearly. He was predeceased by his mother, Margaret; and father, Alex Angus.
He leaves behind nieces and nephews who were like his own children—Charlene (Frankie), Jennifer, William (Erica), Matthew (Emily), Brea (Tony), Katie, and Mitchel (Vekisha).
Joe was a great father, a devoted husband, a natural leader, and a mentor to many. Most of all, he was a true friend to all who knew him. His legacy of kindness, service, and love for his family and community will never be forgotten.
Visitation will be held in Inverness Funeral Home on Thursday February 27, 2025, from 2-4pm. Funeral Mass to take place in St. Margaret of Scotland Church, Broad Cove on Friday February 28, 2025, at 11:00am. Burial to be held at a later date.
