Bernie was born in Port Hood to the late John A. and Marcella (Mac Donald) Chisholm on June 11, 1941, in Inverness Hospital. Bernie was a reserved and serious man, but he was known for his kind and gentle heart, and his big laugh. He loved to laugh. Everyone in the Port Hood community knew who Bernard Chisholm was, known to locals as a widespread socialite and student of Gaelic culture and history. He was keenly interested in genealogy. An avid storyteller, he knew everyone in the broader Inverness Country simply by asking who they were related to, and he could tell you stories about their ancestors at the drop of a hat.
Bernard was deeply committed to his family and friends. He would do almost anything for anyone at the drop of a hat. He would make time for any of his grandchildren simply by being there at every hockey game, ballet recital, school concert, drama production, music recital, graduation ceremony. If his grandchildren were there than so, was he. This was a grandfather who never missed out on his grandchildren’s lives, and they were blessed to have had his love and support unconditionally.
Bernie (blue) worked at Stora for most of his working career as a millwright. He enjoyed working with many fine fellows at Stora where a joke could be taken the extra mile. Bernie retired from Stora in 2003 to his new position of grandfather with all its responsibilities.
He is survived by his two sons, James Cormier-Chisholm (Laurie), Annapolis Valley, NS; Marcel Chisholm (Corinne) Port Hood, NS; and his sister, Anne (Dave) Peralta, Mineville NS. Bernie continues to live on through his four grandchildren, Emily, Ryan, Connor, and Callum Chisholm (Marcel and Corinne Chisholm), his many nieces and nephews.
Bernie was predeceased by his wife, Frances (Mac Donnell) Chisholm; and his two sons, Kenneth Chisholm and Alan Chisholm; brothers and sisters, Duncan, Alex and John, Sr. Coline, and Mary Phil.
We will miss Bernard Chisholm dearly, his humor and his dedicated commitment to the Gaelic community, as well as broader history of the surrounding area.
