Derek Shannon Spears December 31,1971-January 20,2019

On January 20,2019 in the Halifax Infirmary QE11, surrounded by family, our beloved and devoted husband, precious son, dear brother, awesome Uncle "D" to Reg and Shea and his loyal fur baby Ebby peacefully closed his beautiful brown eyes and went to meet his Savior Jesus. Derek showered his family with unconditional love, support, and generosity. He especially enjoyed Christmas time and his dad's turkey dinners and he always spent his own birthday by preparing a huge New Years feast for us. Derek was a very proud third-generation fishermen ,Captain of the Charity Christine out of Murphy's Pond ,Port Hood. He was also the successful owner of D&M Mobile Burgers better known as "the Bus". With Derek's easy-going personality, he could easily strike up a conversation with anyone regardless of age and forged a special bond with many of these people. He was a tremendously devoted member of the Port Hood & Area Volunteer Fire Department as a firefighter and Medical First Responder, giving it up when his health started to fail. He also served on the boards of the Ceilidh Fishermen's Co-op and the Harbour Authority of Port Hood. In his last weeks at home he said he found the song" Live this Life" very comforting. Now we known why. Derek is survived by his wife, Marie; parents, Lloyd and Diane; sister, Sheri (Tony); nephew, Reg; niece Shea; parents-in-law, John and Julia; brother-in-law, Darrell (Sue); uncles, aunts and cousins. Family Flowers only. Memorial donations can be made to the Harbour Authority of Port Hood, P.O Box 193 Port Hood, N.S. or a charity of one's choice. Visitation will be held on Sunday ,January 27 from 2-9 p.m. in Port Hood and Area Resting Place. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 28th in Saint Peter's Church, Port Hood, with Fr. Vincent vanZutphen and Fr. Eugene Morris officiating. Burial at a later date. Marie, Diane, Lloyd and Sheri,
I was so sorry to hear about Derek. I know how close you are as a family and have been thinking of you through this difficult time. So many of my memories of happy afternoons spent at the Spears residence during childhood involve Derek and his welcoming, warm, inclusive nature. I have especially cherished those memories in this past week and am grateful to have known him as a neighbor and as Sheri's kind-hearted brother. My deepest condolences for your loss.

No words can say how sorry I was to hear about Derek. It seems you leave Cape Breton and lose track of all family and friends. Family always stays in the heart and when something like this happens you realize how important family is. My heart goes out to you Uncle Lloyd , Aunt Diane, Sheri , Marie .
I am not able to make it down but you are all in my prayers and thoughts 💔.

Love 💗 Marion Hyslop ( Spears)
