It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Ed, who was born November 23, 1954, in New Waterford, N.S. and died Oct. 21, 2026, in the QEII Hospital, Halifax. He passed peacefully with loved ones by his side.
Ed was a son of the late Eileen (Boucher/Hill) MacDonald and his father's, John Angus MacIntyre and John Finlay MacDonald. Besides his parents, Ed was predeceased by his father-in-law, Joseph Luc Chiasson; mother-in-law, Helen Rose (Poirier) Chiasson; brothers-in-law, Jon and Ivan as well as his nephew, Todd.
Ed lived a life defined by quiet strength, gentle guidance, hard work, and a wonderful sense of humour that could bring a smile to anyone’s face. He was a man of few words, but those words were often perfectly timed, delivered with a quick wit that those who knew him came to appreciate and love.
After the sudden death of his father on the family farm, Ed put aside his wants and wishes to become a father figure to his younger siblings. He was later able to continue his education and attended ST. FX graduating with a Bachelor of Education degree. Following employment stops in Alberta and Ontario, where he taught school, Ed returned to his Glengarry home.
He went on to work at the Port Hood Co-op, where Ed had a special gift for sharing his knowledge, particularly when it came to farming supplies and gardening. He was always willing to offer advice, answer a question, or help someone find just what they needed. And, true to his nature, he would often finish the conversation with one last remark, delivered with that unmistakable wit that left customers smiling long after they had left the store.
Edward found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was a devoted fan of the Detroit Red Wings and Tigers, cheering them on through every win and loss, along with the baseball drafts. He also loved gardening, lending a hand with cheese and hay making, and baking delicious treats to share with those he loved. His homemade perogies were especially treasured, and he took pleasure in making sure family and friends had a chance to enjoy his creations.
No matter where life had taken him, the farm remained close to his heart. He spent much of his time making his daily trip “home,” a familiar and meaningful routine that spoke to the deep connection he felt to the land, his roots, and the life he cherished. The farm was more than a place; it was a part of who he was. He especially loved to spend time with his “girls”, giving eggs out to whoever stopped by.
Ed’s life reminds us that a person does not need to be the loudest in the room to leave the greatest impression. Sometimes, the most lasting legacy is built quietly, one kind act, one shared laugh, and one thoughtful gesture at a time.
He is survived by the love of his life, Geoffrine; children, Nathan (Danielle), Jessica (Adam); stepdaughters, Jennifer (Mike), Lindsay (Dylan); as well as his siblings, Jacqueline Mac Donald (Jon), Ontario, Rodney (Noella) Mac Intyre, P.E.I., Pam (Jackie) MacDonnell, Patricia MacIntyre, John Angus (Sherri) MacIntyre, Francis (Sandy) Mac Donald, Joyce (Ivan) Morrison as well as his numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to all the doctors, nurses, and staff at the QEII and Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital for their excellent care given to him.
