MacDONALD, Florence Elizabeth — 81, of Port Hood, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2009, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Florence was born on January 8, 1928, to Sandy and Catherine Campbell in Inverness. In her early years, Florence attended Provincial Normal College (1946-47) and taught school for two years in West Mabou. She then concentrated on raising a family of nine children. As the wife of the sheriff, she provided meals for the county jail. She had a lifelong love for music which included playing the organ, singing Gaelic and traditional songs with her East Street neighbours and she enjoyed listening to a good tune. In addition Florence always had time to listen to and tell old stories. Some of the old East Street stories would question any innocence of her youth. Florence is the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by sons, Alexander (Corn), Saint John, N.B.; Donald (Sissy), Dartmouth; Bernie, Fort McMurray; Curtis (Laureen), Port Hood; daughters, Kate (Robert), Cole Harbour; Colleen (Chris), Dartmouth; Maureen, Edmonton, Alta.; grandchildren, Matthew, Andrew, and Breagh MacDonald, Nicole and Ryan Norris, Colin MacDonald, Robert Gillis, Lauren, Kayla and Aaron MacDonald and great-grandchild, Liam Watts. Florence was predeceased by her husband, Collie Sandy (the sheriff) 1992; sons, John A, 1964, and Byron 1986; brothers, Duncan Campbell 1984 and Alex Campbell 2003, and half-sister, Florence Sheppard 1988. Florence was a great friend and neighbor to all, always had cookies and treats on hand for the neighborhood kids and had a special place in her heart for Detroit Red Wings, especially No. 9 and No. 19, her cats Ginger and Boots, a good "scotch" tune, stories of Port Hood and Cape Breton Island and above all had a great love for a good cup of tea. Visitation will take place in St. Peter’s Parish Hall, Port Hood on Friday, October 2, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral will take place in Saint Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Port Hood at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Father Victor Ozoufuanya officiating.
