On Saturday, May 26, 2018, God called upon Joan to join him in heaven. Born in Montreal, Joan grew up and attended school graduating from The Mother House and later becoming a secretary at McGill University.
Joan loved to dance and play tennis. It was likely those tennis and dance moves that brought her late husband Joe 'Speed' MacIsaac to fall in love and marry her, bringing her back home to Port Hood, on beautiful Cape Breton Island.
Joan was a member of the CWL, of St. Peter's Parish and was very close with her friends in and around Port Hood. She loved it when people would drop by to share some tea and cookies, have a glass of wine with cheese and crackers or just chat and get caught up on what she would call "all the news". She also loved the outdoors and enjoyed bringing family and friends to the beaches and boardwalk of Port Hood.
Joan is survived by her daughter, Joanie McIlhone; and her son, Donnie and daughter-in-law, Sue McIlhone. She has five grandchildren: Jeffrey, Jennifer, Melissa, Candice and Elias and seven great-grand children: Ella, Luke, Brooke, Ethan, J.J., Zoe and Nate.
Joan was the only daughter of the late R.L. and Olive MacLean and sister to the late Keith and Leonard MacLean. Her 'baby' brother Donald lives in Toronto, Ont. Joan's grandfather was the late D.F. MacLean, the first mayor of Port Hood.
Visitation will be held Friday, June 1st, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Port Hood and Area Resting Place. Funeral mass will be held on Saturday, June 2nd, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Peter's Catholic Church, Port Hood, with Father Vincent vanZutphen officiating. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to central Inverness Palliative Care Society or to St. Peter's Parish Cemetery Fund, Port Hood.
