John Bernard Smith, 71 of Inverness, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully at home with family by his side on Sunday, August 3rd, 2025 after a day of being surrounded by family.
Born in Inverness on October 20, 1953, Bernie was a son of the late John Angus Smith and Catherine Smith (MacEachern) of Deepdale, Inverness County.
Bernie is survived by his wife, Cheryl Smith of Niagra Falls, ON; only son, Adam (Kenzie) Smith of Inverness; step-daughter, Gina Faubert (Demitri Triantafillou) of Waterdown, ON; brothers, Donnie MacDonald of Kingston, ON and Colonel (Gloria) Smith of Inverness; sister, Rachael (Bob) McConnell of Liverpool; and step-granddaughter, Naomi Faubert of Waterdown, ON; sister-in-law, Cindy Smith as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister, Pauline Krahl of Inverness; brothers, Gordon Smith of Inverside, Inverness, and Joe Smith also of Inverness.
Bernie had a lot of experience in work, starting out fishing with his father and brothers, mining, working for the Toronto Department of Education, the Department of Public Works, and the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital. Bernie loved playing cards, especially poker. Everybody always had a story about him, he was personable and very memorable.
Bernie was always up to shenanigans, and you never left his house without a good laugh. He was always laughing, giggling and had a lot of lasting friendships.

In life, Bernie was inseparable from his brother Gordon. In that spirit, he will be laid to rest beside his brother. A graveside service for friends and family will take place on Friday August 8th at 11:00am in St. Margaret of Scotland Parish Cemetery, Broad Cove.
