It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of John Alex Smith after a hard-fought battle with cancer. John passed away peacefully on September 19th at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital surrounded by family.
Born August 6, 1978, he was a son of Angus Willie and the late Pauline Smith of Port Hood.
John followed in his father's footsteps when it came to his love of big rigs and mechanics. He was a hard-working heavy-duty mechanic for most of his career which brought him many great friends and allowed him to share his wealth of knowledge with others.
John also had a passion for hockey. Whether he was standing tall in goal for local teams or coaching his younger brother's squads, his love for the game was always clear to see.
John will be deeply missed by his son, Matthew (Andrea), Sydney, and daughter, Maddie (Coren), Mulgrave.
Along with his children, left to mourn are his father, Angus Willie (late Pauline Smith), Port Hood; sisters, Julie (Michael), Glenora, and Megan (Long Point); brothers, Ian (Clorice), Mabou, Brian (Lisa), Port Hood, Darren (Joanne), Port Hood, Phillip (Michelle), Port Hawkesbury, and Stephen (Kathryn), Dartmouth. John also leaves behind Brody, Bradley, Anna, and Jacob, who all held a special place in his heart, as well as many nieces and nephews.
The Smith family would like to say a sincere thank you to the staff at the Cape Breton Regional Cancer Center and Palliative Care Unit, especially nurse Vicky, for their compassion and care during this difficult time.
They would also like to extend a special thank you to John's friend, Dan. Your kindness and support throughout these final months are greatly appreciated.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, September 26th from 2pm-7pm in St. Peter’s Parish Hall, Port Hood.
