The peaceful passing of Lybison, age 90, occurred at his home in St. Rose on April 9, 2011, with his loving wife and family by his side. Born in Inverness on February 13, 1921, he was the son of the late Peter John and Elizabeth (MacLean) MacKay and stepmother, Ruth. He is survived by his wife, Emma (Newton); children, Marion (Mike), Inverness; Susan (John), Halifax; John (Edith), East Margaree; Clara (Gavin), London, U.K.; Janet (Jamie), Sydney River; Allan (Sheila), Kenloch; Richard (Micheline), Windsor; Charles (Chlory), Inverness; 17 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; brother, Alex, Inverness; sister, Annie, Peterborough, Ont. He was predeceased by brothers, Dan G., Jackie and Nelson; sisters, Isabel, Mary and Evelyn. He was a veteran of the Second World War serving overseas with the Governor General’s Foot Guards as a Sherman tank radio operator and gunner. He spent most of his working life as a manager at the Evans Coal Mine. He was a lifelong learner and his interests were varied. He enjoyed carpentry, reading, gardening, mathematics and sports. He was a Detroit Red Wings fan, switching loyalties late in life to enjoy the Pittsburg Penguins with his adoring grandchildren. He was first and foremost a family man. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Emma and Lyb were seldom apart enjoying a simple life with their family in the beautiful natural surroundings of St. Rose. He was thoughtful, witty and wise. He was a man of great integrity and will be missed by all who knew him. Thank you to the palliative care staff for their support and expertise. A special thanks to Allan Newton for his help and attention.
