It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Margaret Janet MacDonell in Inverary Manor in Inverness on November 3, 2014. Margaret was born in the Port Hood Lighthouse on December 26, 1928, to Angus J. and Mary Ann (Gillis) MacDonell. Margaret attended Port Hood Academy. She graduated from St. Joseph’s Convent, Mabou and then went on to graduate from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing, Glace Bay.
Margaret’s calling as a nurse showed her true passion to help others throughout her lifetime. Margaret, with her big heart, cared so deeply and unselfishly for all her family and community, especially her sister Theresa.
Margaret lived and worked in Montreal for over 30 years where her home was a destination and gathering place for all travelers. She would make a sleeping space for all, no matter the number, tour her company around Montreal, drive home to Cape Breton with a car full of eager nieces, nephews and grand nieces and then display her hospitality all over again in her Cape Breton home. She would always listen with enthusiasm about the adventures and life experiences of all those she encountered. She had many stories to share as she traveled throughout North America, the Caribbean, and European countries.
Margaret was predeceased by her parents Angus J. and Mary Ann; brothers, Donald Alex (Catherine) and Vesty and brother- in- law, John Campbell; two nephews and one grand nephew. She is survived by her brothers, Blaise (Mary Lou), Johnnie (Jeanette); sisters, Annie Mae (Angus Bernard), Theresa and Bea and sister-in- law Magdeline MacDonell. She is also survived by 31 nieces and nephews; 66 grandnieces and nephews; two great grand nieces, and two long-time friends from Montreal Trés Lowry and Mikki Landry.
Visitation will be held at the Port Hood Community Resting Place Thursday, November 6, from 7-9 p.m. and Friday, November 7, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 8th in St. Peter’s Parish, Port Hood, celebrated by Fr. Vincent. vanZutphen. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, Dr. John Water’s Medical Centre or to a charity of your choice. On-line condolences may be made to: www.invernessfuneralhome.com
The faithful shall abide with him in love, and Margaret did exactly that. Her faith was strong.
