Our world lost a beautiful glowing light in the passing of our Mother, Wife, Daughter, Sister, Grandmother and Friend.
Marjorie Joyce MacDonald made a peaceful departure on January 17, 2020 from Saint Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish.
Marjorie, or Marge as she was affectionately referred to, was known for her warmth, kindness, sense of style, her delicious cooking, and the love she had for her family. The nickname bestowed upon her by her grandchildren was “Grandma Glamour” (or GG for short), a most fitting description for this beautiful woman. GG was often in her favourite place: her kitchen. She could be found making meals for those in need, whipping up dinner for family and friends or baking for her grandchildren - no one made biscuits like Grandma! Her kind and gentle nature made her perfect for a career in Personal Work, where she spent many fulfilling years working with those in need at Mary’s Hill Home in Mabou and Small Options in Inverness.
Marjorie was a truly rare, self-sacrificing soul. She spent her childhood years in Judique, and as a teen moved with her family to Boston, Mass., in search of new opportunities. She was hired at John Hancock Insurance and quickly established herself as a key member of their team. Although she enjoyed the work and the connections with other people, she took immense pleasure in the opportunity to dress and present herself in a professional manner. After she met and married her best friend and true love Alex, she moved back to Cape Breton to raise their family. The thoughts and feelings of others were important to her, and she was blessed with the gift of wisdom at such a young age to truly understand what it means to live a rich and fulfilling life.
Marjorie had the power to see the positive in everything and everyone. Whether it was dealing with her own health struggles (cancer), lending a helping hand in her community as a member of the CWL, supporting friends, or sharing the joys and challenges of her family, she could always be counted on to be a warm and supportive force.
Marjorie is survived by her devoted husband and life partner of 47 years, Alexander MacDonald; loving children, Theresa (Mike Renton), Shelley, Derek, Kyle, Jessica (Mark MacIsaac); precious grand-children Drew, Cole, Mia, Jace, Callie Mae, Camden, Bradyn, Reegan Elle; as well as her mother, Theresa Cobb Avery; siblings, John (Anne-Marie) Jesslyn (Thomas Conway) Gary, Yvonne (Richard Conway), Patrick; and sister-in-law, Diane Cobb. She is predeceased by her brothers, Reginald, Bernard, Albert and Tyrone.
Visitation will take place in Port Hood and Area Resting Place on Wednesday January 22 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will take place in St. Peter’s Parish Church, Port Hood at 11 a.m. on Thursday January 23rd with Father Andrew Gillies officiating. Burial at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Saint Martha’s Palliative Care Unit or the Port Hood and Area Resting Place.
