With heavy hearts, the family of Monica Beaton announces her passing on May 22nd , 2021, at age 81.
Monica was born January 6, 1940 in Glenora Falls, Inverness County, Cape Breton Island. She was a daughter of the late Archie and Mary Ann (Boyle) Beaton. She had eight brothers and four sisters.
In her youth, she went off to Boston for domestic work, like so many others at the time. But the call of the Island brought her back home. She married John Dan Beaton in 1967, and soon began raising her family. By the mid-80’s, she worked for several years as a custodian at Mabou Consolidated School. But health issues ultimately forced her to retire.
Mom enjoyed Celtic music, and had been a member of the Mabou Step Dancers for several years, performing at the Mabou Ceilidh on parade floats and on stage. She enjoyed ‘spirited’ card games with neighbours and friends, and would also enjoy the numerous kitchen parties that were known to pop up when family members visited home from away. She was a talented artist and very creative, enjoyed nature and being outdoors.
The family is forever grateful to so many people for their efforts and concern. To family, friends and neighbours for their assistance and visits, to the staff at the Inverary Manor, to Dr. LaFrance and staff at the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital and Palliative Care Program, to the staff at Heritage House in Port Hood, and to Inverness Funeral Home for their guidance through our most difficult time.
Monica is survived by two children, Evan (Tammy) Beaton in Bible Hill, Laureen (Darrell) Nicholson in Elmsdale; grandchildren, Jordan, Erin, and Dustin; as well as brother, Stanley (Micheline) Beaton of Bathurst, New Brunswick. She was predeceased by husband, John Dan Beaton; and siblings, Sally, Finley, John, Archie, Peter, Don, Mary, John Francis, Bernie, Dorothy, and Patricia. At the time of her passing, she was in the company of her family. As per her wishes there will be no visitation, and cremation has already taken place. Funeral and interment will take place at a later time. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Always thinking of others, her compassion, creative spirit and sense of humour will be missed by all that knew her.
Memorial donations can be made to the Central Inverness Palliative Care Society or St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery fund in Mabou.
