It is with great sadness that we, the family of the late Reta MacInnis, announce her passing on March 15, 2025. Reta was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, whose warmth and creativity touched the lives of many.
Reta grew up in Northern Ontario but spent most of her life in Cape Breton, where she shared many cherished years with her loving husband, Burke. Together, they made their home in Whiteside, where they forged lasting friendships that would endure for decades. Eventually, they left Whiteside to reside on Burke's grandfather's farm in Colindale, a place where Reta found peace and joy in the beauty and tranquility of the countryside. Her home was truly her sanctuary, a place where her spirit flourished.
Reta was a gifted and passionate artist, known for her exceptional talents in a variety of mediums. Her love for creation knew no bounds, from sewing and knitting to crocheting and needle point. One of her signature creations was her crocheted sheep. With the help of her husband, they designed and crafted thousands of pieces that found their way to all corners of the globe. Reta was also a skilled painter, creating beautiful works in both acrylics and oils that reflected her deep appreciation for the world around her.
Reta was not only an artist but also a successful businesswoman. Her ownership of the Mabou Knit and Sew Shoppe allowed her to combine her passion for creation with her business acumen. It was here that she met countless individuals and formed lasting friendships.
Reta will be met at the gates of Heaven by the love of her life, Burke, and her beloved grandson Mike, along with other family members who have gone before her. Reta, was the last surviving member of her family, predeceased by her mom and dad, Oswald and Ida Antoine of Espanola, her sisters Shirley, Isabell, Florence, and Helen, as well as her brothers Earl and Gordon.
She leaves behind her sons, John (Kimberly) MacInnis, Mike (Brenda) MacInnis; and daughters, Peggy (Alex) MacNeil and Nicole (Kevin Campbell) Fawcett. Reta was extremely proud of her 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews.
Reta's passing leaves a profound hole in the hearts of all who knew her, but her legacy of love, creativity, and kindness will continue to live on in the countless lives she touched.
The family would like to extend their utmost gratitude and appreciation for the wonderful care she received from Inverness Home Care and Palliative Care support teams, as well as her wonderful neighbors and extended family that together, along with her strong faith, made it possible for her to remain in her home safe and comfortable until her passing.
