It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Roderick Colonel Smith on September 23, 2025, surrounded by family. Born in Inverness, Cape Breton, on April 24, 1949, and raised in his beloved Deepdale, Colonel lived a life filled with hard work, passion, and storytelling.
He was predeceased by his parents, John Angus and Katie Anne Smith; his sister, Pauline; brothers, Gordon, Bernie and Joe; and his stepson, John (Hippy). He is survived by his wife, Gloria; his sister Rachael (Bob); his brother, Donnie; his sister-in-law, Cindy; his stepchildren, Jimmy, Norma Jean (Trent), and Al (Emma); his cherished grandchildren, Sarah, Seth, Mitchell, Chloe and his nieces and nephews.
Colonel spent most of his life working for himself as a fisherman, a trade that suited his independence and deep respect for the sea. Known as “Top Dog” for many seasons. He earned respect on the water through his skill, determination, and hard work. Beyond the sea, he had a lifelong passion for horses and the racetrack, where he owned and raced horses such as Harbourview Chip, McNamara, LoLoLoLogan, and Hippyjohn. The track became a second home to him, a place where he could be found in lively conversation about everything from horses to the weather.
Known for his gift of storytelling, Colonel could capture a room with a tale – often leaving the listeners wondering where the truth ended, and the embellishment began. His stories, his laughter and his presence will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Colonel’s life was filled with family, friendship, and the things he loved the most. His memory will live on in the hearts of his loved ones and in his many stories that will continue to be told.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Lori Ann and Janelle for their care and support; as well as to the nurses, doctors and staff of the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital for their kindness and compassion.
Cremation has taken place. As requested, there will be no funeral or graveside service.
Memorial donations may be made to Central Inverness Palliative Care Society.
