MacDonald, Roderick Joseph "Roddie" – 74, passed away peacefully with his wife by his side on Saturday, January 22, 2011. Roddie “Angus Johnny Ban” was born in Mabou on May 24, 1936 to Angus Anthony and Katie Margaret MacDonald. Like so many Cape Bretoners, he moved to Toronto in the early ‘50s to earn a living. It was there he met and married “the most beautiful woman he had ever laid eyes on,” Margaret Ann MacInnis. Roddie worked at Stora Forest Industries in Port Hawkesbury for 30 years where his co-workers knew him as “Roddie Mabou”. While raising his family, he found time to volunteer for many local organizations. He had fond memories of his time as a hockey coach and a member of the Mabou Arena Commission. Roddie loved and promoted everything about Cape Breton culture: Scottish music, square dances, community card plays and the efforts and achievements of its people. To his grandchildren, Luke, Shannon, Noah, Catherine, James, Rachael, Siobhan, Grace and Angus, “Popi” was known as the inventor of the “bop” and the “Popi tuck”. Roddie is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Margie; and his children, Wayne (Colleen), Ontario; Sharon (Mike) Parker, Bridgetown; Lorna (Danny) MacDonald, Angus (Brenda), and Devin, all of Mabou; sister, Christina Ann Beaton and brother, John Alex, both of Mabou. He is predeceased by his sister, Mary Beaton and brother, Alexander. Memorial donations may be made to the Inverness Hospital Foundation. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 26 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with funeral being held at St. Mary’s Church, Mabou at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 27. Burial will take place at a later date.
