March 14, 1952 – August 10th, 2025
It is with great love and a lot of tears, that we say goodbye to our beloved Susan Annaia Gillis, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, and all-around legend of the White Rows.
Susan was a daughter of the late Archie and Margaret (MacKinnon) MacDonnell. Susie leaves behind her proudest accomplishments: her son, William Franklin (Billy Frank) Gillis (Kristen MacKinnon); her daughter, Jennifer May (Jenny) Gillis; and the lights of her life, her grandchildren, Anaya and Isla Crawford; and Jonah and Lana Gillis. She is also survived by her brothers, Laughie (Ardyth), Alex “Hubba” (Mary Catherine); and her twin brother, Billy (Josephine); her sisters, Mary Florence “Sissy” (James), Shirley, Josie (Bobby), Kathleen (Frankie).
Susan also had a soft spot for her “bonus kids,” the boys and girls she claimed as her own, who will miss her just as fiercely.
Though she stood at just 4’11”, Susan was a giant in toughness, grit, and love. She lived to take care of anyone who came through her door. Her kitchen was the heart of her home, and she was the undisputed Queen of fresh homemade bread, a title awarded by her kids, grandkids and all the neighborhood kids who knew exactly when to show up hungry.
Susan could dance and sing, especially to old country songs. But when she broke into her famous Funky Chicken dance, well, you’d better make room, because nothing could stop her once she got going!
Susan’s life was built on laughter, hard work, and love so big it spilled over to everyone lucky enough to know her. We will miss her every single day, but we take comfort in knowing that Grandma Margaret, Da, and the rest of the crew are welcoming her with open arms hopefully blasting her favorite song Susie Q.
Visitation will be held in Inverness Funeral Home on Monday August 18th, 2025 from 3-7 pm. Funeral Mass will take place in Stella Maris Church, Inverness on Tuesday August 19th, 2025 at 11:00 am. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery.
