It is with love and sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Theresa Ann Mac Donell, on May 7, 2018, with her family by her side. Theresa died at the Inverary Manor in Inverness, just 3 days short of her 88th birthday.
Theresa was born in Inverness, on May 10, 1930 to the late Angus J. and Mary Ann (Gillis) Mac Donell.
Theresa attended the Port Hood Academy and Business School in Truro, and worked as a dedicated cashier at the Port Hood Co-op for 41 years. She was well known as “Theresa at the Co-op” where she excelled in her ability to know both the price of all merchandise along with your Co-op number. Theresa would balance the daily revenue sheets by hand with pencil and paper, long before the use of calculators.
Theresa was the prankster of the family and loved to have fun by making people laugh, especially her brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. She was always game for anything. Theresa was kind and generous and willing to extend a helping hand. Theresa was a strong and independent woman who never hesitated to express her thoughts and opinion. Only two things could rile her up: “not shopping at the Co-op” or “not voting Liberal”!
Theresa adored children and children always gravitated towards her and her kind and fun-loving personality. Nieces and nephews were always welcome company “out home” and they were all cherished equally. Theresa often would bring special treats home from the store for her nieces and nephews. Theresa enjoyed a good cup of tea, especially in a china cup and saucer. She loved music and often shared her musical gifts by playing the piano and singing with her family and neighbours for parties and many fun gatherings. Her home was always filled with love and laughter. Playing cards, especially auction, was a favorite activity. Whether she won or lost the game, she was often known to give out a shout or hit the table with her hand as she laid out a trump.
Theresa was predeceased by her parents, Angus J. and Mary Ann; brothers: Donald Alex and sister-in-law Catherine; Vesty; sister: Margaret and brother-in-law, John Campbell. She is survived by her brothers, Blaise (Mary Lou) and Johnnie (Jeanette); sisters, Mae (Angus Bernard), Bea and sister-in-law Magdeline; 31 nieces and nephews, 67 grandnieces and nephews and 11 great grand-nieces and nephews.
A special thank you is extended to all the staff at the Inveraray Manor, especially the staff in Harbourlights for their special care and compassion during Theresa’s stay.
Visitation will be held in Port Hood and Area Resting Place Friday, May 11th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 12 in St. Peter’s Parish, Port Hood, celebrated by Fr. Vincent vanZutphen. Memorial donations may be made to the Port Hood Co-op “Raise the Roof Campaign” or to a charity of your choice.
Theresa will be forever loved and remembered for her strong faith and devotion to St. Theresa the Little Flower.
