McMaster, Vincent Melanson D.D.S.

Age 97, of Inverness, passed away peacefully in Inverness Consolidated Hospital surrounded by family. Born December 14, 1920 in Sydney, he was the youngest of eight children.

Vincent was an able athlete and academic in his youth – he received top honors in both athletics and academics for the city of Sydney. After completing high school he worked at the Sydney Steel plant, saving for his planned career. He attended Dalhousie Dental School, graduating in 1947. Vincent opened his first dental practice in New Waterford. A few years later he moved his practice to Inverness. In 1957 he joined the Canadian Army Dental Corps. While with the services he was stationed in Shearwater, and Slemon Park, P.E.I. In his last three years of service he served aboard the aircraft carrier “Bonaventure” and supply ship “Cape Scott”. In 1969, he returned to Inverness, where he worked as a Public Health Dentist in the schools of Inverness County.

Dad enjoyed visiting family, playing bridge and reading. From our father we learned the value of family. By his modeling of always being there for us, we learned to be there for one another and our families. He had a saying “We will eat at your favorite restaurant and mine”. That was our house. We learned to eat together. Meal time was with family and lots of great conversation. We all have fond memories of picking blueberries, cranberries and apples with him, and also making root beer, apple sauce and ice cream. We went on picnics and to family reunions. To entertain us, he would frequently break into spontaneous dancing, singing, or reciting poetry. These wonderful moments are among our favorite memories.

Vincent was predeceased by his parents, Duncan McMaster and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Deveau, and was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He leaves behind his wife of 70 years, Alice Anne McMaster (Burke), and eight children, Pat MacNeil, JoAnne (Lloyd) MacDougall, Alice (Scott) MacGregor, Vincent (Sandy) McMaster D.D.S, Duncan (Wanda) McMaster D.D.S, Elizabeth McMaster, Elaine (Charlie) Cameron, Michelle (Brenda ) McMaster; grandchildren, Ashley, Dustin , Hayden , Eppy , Hayley, Bryden, Justin, Patricia, Matthew, Duncan, Lindsay, Caleb, and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Tuesday, December 11th in Inverness Funeral Home from 2-4 and 7 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be in Stella Maris Church Wednesday, December 12th at 11 a.m. Father Dan MacDonald officiating.

Dear Alice, I was so sorry to hear the news of Vince's passing. I had the best memories of Vince during my childhood when the McLean sisters would gather for a reunion at Cossitt Street in Sydney. The occasion would often be chaotic with lots of cards, conversation and song. Well, those that knew the McLean sisters can attest to a certain lack of musical ability and it was always Vince that would save the song. He was consistently kind and calm and wonderful to talk to . My deepest condolences to you and your family.

Alice and family, I was so sorry to hear of Vince's passing. I have many great memories as a younger child of visiting and enjoying the McMaster household. I particularly remember the great gift Uncle Vince gave to Dad in the form of a marathon of dental care when he needed it most. Dad would have lost his teeth if it were not for Uncle Vince's intervention. I am so sorry I will not be able to attend the funeral but our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Joe & Josie's boy "J.B."

Uncle Vincent lived a life of dignity, compassion and joy. He had something to give to everyone he met. Did he ever say no or fail to see a need? I loved his smile, sense of fun and commitment to family. Mom, his sister Katie, told us of her studious, focused brother who could study when the house was filled by partiers trying to lead him astray. Her pride in her brother was endless. Alice and family, you all know you lived a charmed life with him. Bob and I count ourselves as blessed for having known this good man.
With love from Judy and Bob

Dear Aunt Alice and Family,
Gordon and I were so sorry to hear of Uncle Vincent's passing. My most vivid memory of him was his kindness and smile. As a child, I remembering visiting your family and oh the fun we had. A few years ago we were in Inverness on our way to visit the family when driving by the church we saw Uncle Vincent running up the steps. We were amazed by his energy. He will be in our prayers. Love to you Aunt Alice and family.
We will miss him.

When Uncle Vincent was stationed at Shearwater and I was a poor university student living with my sister Leona ( on her beginning teacher salary) I had a grand plan to lay away a fabulous coat at the New York Dress shop. Regular visits with Uncle Vincent and Aunt Alice bailed me out. His generosity ensured senior year included that delightful red coat. Whenever I wore that coat and forever after I remembered their wonderful personalities that gave more than they ever took from the world.
In Florida I had the ultimate pleasure of sharing amazing times with two people I loved. A special place in heaven awaits these good people.
Love always Peggi Ann
