COLUMBIA Funeral service for Barbara Abernathy Leitner will be held at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 8, 2015, at Union United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 p.m. Monday, December 7, 2015, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo. Mrs. Leitner, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend went to be with our Lord on Wednesday, December 2, 2015. Born July 6, 1936, in Atlanta, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Beatrice and Lewis Abernathy. During her teens she moved with her father and stepmother, Sara, to Columbia. She graduated from Columbia High School. There she was voted Most Friendly and was a Majorette. She was a member of Union United Methodist Church in Irmo. Her professional years were spent working for Delta Air Lines. While at Delta she was presented the President’s Customer Service Award. Barbara enjoyed spending time with her family, taking care of her beloved dog “Izzy”, watching birds, butterflies, and spending time in Maggie Valley. Barbara married James “Jimmy” Leitner Jr. in 1957 and they had two daughters. She is survived by her husband; daughters, Mellisa White (Charlie), Anna Richardson (Mark); grandchildren, Amanda Elliott, Mark and Rhett Richardson, Ben (Melissa) and Doug White; sister, Pat Cook; nephews, Van (Louise), Lewis (Becky), Joe (Cathy), Donnie Floyd; and sister-in-law, Carolyn Leitner. She was predeceased by her parents and stepmother, Sara Abernathy. Her family would like to thank all the wonderful ladies who were her caregivers. She loved each one of them. The family would also like to express special thanks to Dr. Rosalie Browning and her staff for many years of compassionate medical care.
