Barbara Jo Gerhardt Ward died at 6:44 am on Saturday, October 10, 2020. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri on March 14, 1957. She grew up in a large family with four siblings. She earned an associate’s degree in business from St. Louis Community College, and began her 40-year career in the insurance industry. She moved to South Carolina in 1985, was married for five years, and gave birth to her son, Shane Ward, in 1987. She was a giving, kind, sweet person who loved to bake cakes and other treats to share with other people. A remarkably talented seamstress, she sewed her own clothing, including intricate business outfits, for many years, loved to create beautiful scrapbooks for family members and friends, and became a talented wreath maker. She won Best in Show at the South Carolina State Fair several times for her crafts and cakes. She enjoyed many wonderful vacations and holidays, including an extended trip to France, with her family, despite suffering from many health problems.

She was cured of stage four acute lymphoma in 1992, but the aggressive radiation treatments caused many health issues down the road, including scar tissue on her heart. Over the years, she survived open heart surgery and many other smaller surgeries and procedures. In the past five years, she suffered acutely from congested heart failure, which affected her ability to breathe.

She is preceded in death by her father, Ernest Charles Gerhardt, and her mother, Margaret Bonnie Belli, both of St. Louis. She is survived by her loving son, Shane Ward, siblings Deborah Montague, Jonathan Gerhardt, Pamela Gerhardt and Joseph Gerhardt, nephews Robert Montague Jr. and Joseph Porter, nieces Claudia Porter and Callie Gerhardt-Perry, great nephew Liam Chacon Gerhardt, and great nieces Lilly and Launa Perry.

A funeral service will be held at Dunbar Funeral Home – Dutch Fork Chapel, Wednesday October 14, 2020 at 11:00 am, 7600 Woodrow Street, Irmo SC, 29063.

I worked with Barbara at Boyle Vaughn and we became good friends. Kind of lost touch with her after I retired. Enjoyed her company and looked forward to seeing her. A great person that will be missed. Love to all of you. Love Taska

Dear Shane and Ward Family,

Your mother /sister was a former coworker of mine from my former Boyle Vaughan days. I’ll never forget how kind she was to me being the “new” employee! We always enjoyed her delicious cakes that she would surprise us with on occasions and share with everyone! Barbara was one to always keep the office laughing because she would speak her mind and display what she thought needed to be mended in the workplace... never blinking an eye! May you find comfort knowing that your mother loved you and spoke of you often ... in return we will never forget her and the joy she brought to so many! God bless my prayers are with you all.

I cherish all memories of my beautiful sister Barb. She was a loving woman, had a heart of Gold. Her and I became pretty close in the last few years, sharing cooking recipes and talking politics. I started texting her “HAPPY FRIDAY” every week for a long time, Pam said she really enjoyed that and that makes me feel so wonderful that she did. I will always keep barb in my heart forever, knowing we will see each other again....

Dear Pam and family. I am just heart broken over the loss of Barb. Such a beautiful soul, full of life, love and laughter. I remember for months after I first met her at your Marshall place house, she called me Gino, thinking that was my name, since I to was Italian. Sleeping in the glass pack at the national park, and no electricity upon arrival to our key west rental. The list goes on. The most recent trip back to South Carolina beaches, where she clearly struggled, but that wouldn’t keep her from the joy of the ocean, even if she couldn’t step into it. I’m grateful to have spent that time with you both, not imagining it would be our last. I know that she is healed now and no longer struggling. She will surely be missed. Love to you all. Jeanne

I met Barb about 9 years ago when I started at Boyle Vaughan. She almost instantly became a mentor and a dear friend. Barb was one of my favorite people on earth. She was so true to herself, so funny and surprising, so kind and giving. She was a bright star and always guided me. She loved my little ones too, even when my toddler son accidentally broke a big glass ball in her garden. She just laughed it off. I will always look up to Barb. She was a very strong woman and as a young single mom I admired her independence. I will miss Barb always. Our world lost a one-of-a-kind woman. Love you lady. ❤
