Gloria McGowen Wier, widow of Caldwell Wardlaw “C.W.” Wier, Jr., passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on February 18, 2016 at Palmetto Health Parkridge Hospital. She was born on May 31, 1923 in Laurens, SC to the late Dr. Robert P. McGowan and Grace Cannon McGowan. Gloria and C.W. were married on June 24, 1947 and lived their married years in Laurens, SC, Moultrie, GA, Nashville, TN, and Oklahoma. They settled in Columbia in 1968. They had four sons, and were married for almost 25 years before C.W. passed away in 1972.
Gloria loved spending time in her yard which she took great pride in, especially her rose garden. A true southern belle, she was fond of sweet tea, with lots of lemon please! She was an avid bridge player and thoroughly enjoyed her weekly games (especially when she got good cards). Gloria adored her grandchildren and paid special attention to staying up-to-date on what was happening in their lives. She will forever be remembered for her kind, gentle soul and ever positive outlook on life.
Mrs. Wier is survived by her sons: Robert McGowen “Mac” Wier (Sara), Caldwell Wardlaw “Collie” Wier, III (Karen), Dickson Cannon Wier (Clair), and daughter-in-law Susan H. Wier; eleven grandchildren, six great-grands. She was predeceased by her husband, son Thomas Withrow Wier, and her sisters.
Visitation will be Sunday, February 21, 2016 from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo, followed by a graveside service at 4:00 p.m. at Laurens City Cemetery, 300 Block of North Harper Street, Laurens, SC.
The family would like to thank and express our sincere gratitude to the staff at the Haltiwanger Building at the Lowman Home, NHC Rehab personnel, and very graciously to Palmetto Health at Parkridge for all of the great care and support during Gloria’s time there.
In lieu of flowers, any memorials would be greatly appreciated to Shriners Hospital for Children, Office of Development, 950 W. Harris Rd., Greenville, SC 29605-4277.
