

He was born in Grays, SC in 1938 to Henry Jacob and Leila May Phillips. He was a proud veteran who served in both The Air Force (active) and Army reserve for 28 years. He married his pen pal and sweetheart, Barbara Sams, in 1959 and settled in Greensboror, NC.
Grady attended Guilford College in Greensboro where he received an Associate’s degree in Business and Finance. He began his career with Kroger Foods in 1960. His love of finance called him to a career with CIT Finance for 11 years and Associate Financial for 2 years. He was employed by Norfolk Southern Railway in 1977 and retired in 2001.
Grady and Barbara enjoyed their retirement residing at Lake Lure, NC. They volunteered regularly with The Salvation Army in Henderson, NC. They also volunteered in local schools to help children learn to read.
Grady is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Scott Hydrick; son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Patti Phillips; his 4 grandsons and their wives, Scott and Paige Hydrick, Phillip and Shanna Hydrick, Kyle Phillips, and Cory and Rebecca Phillips; 4 great-grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Tripp Hydrick, Nolan Hydrick, Phillip Hydrick, and Peyton Hydrick; and sister, Gloria Hahn of Forest City, NC.
A memorial service to celebrate Grady’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 11, 2023 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, in Irmo, SC. The family will receive guests immediately after the service.
