

Following high school, John began a career in construction and went on to establish his own successful remodeling business. In 1985, he answered a different calling and joined the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, where he proudly served for 25 years, retiring with the rank of Sergeant.
During his distinguished law enforcement career, John was a member of the SWAT team and was honored with numerous awards, including four Major Case Contribution Awards, the Master Marksman Award, the Tactical Operations Contribution Award, and the Meritorious Conduct Award. He was deeply respected by colleagues and the community for his courage, dedication, and integrity.
He is survived by his cherished daughter, Courtney Derrick (James), and his beloved grandchildren, Shirley and Jacob Derrick. He is also survived by his former wife and friend, Debbie; his brother-in-law, Jim Sears; and many friends and former colleagues.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Pat Sears.
A memorial service to celebrate John’s life will be held on Sunday, August 3, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, 7600 Woodrow Street, Irmo, SC 29063, with visitation to follow.
John will be remembered for his unwavering service, his sense of humor, and his love for his family and friends.
