Paul pursued higher education at the University of Miami, graduating magna cum laude before following his call to ministry at Drew Theological Seminary. His academic and spiritual journey led him to a lifelong vocation as a United Methodist minister in the Florida Conference. Throughout his career, he served congregations with dedication and compassion.
He was married for over 58 years to Carolyn Van Dine, who preceded him in death. Together they raised three children: two daughters, Vicki Gibson and Karen (Michael) Filaseta, who survive him, and a son Mark (Tracy) Van Dine, who also preceded him in death. His legacy continues through his granddaughters—Katherine, Elizabeth (Seth), Emily, Maggie, and Alexandra—and great-grandsons David, Henry, and Rowan.
Later in life, Paul found renewed love and companionship with his wife Alice, who survives him along with their three beloved kitty cats. Their years together brought joy and comfort.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles W. and Nellie Ruth Maupin Van Dine; his grandparents, Rev. Ernest J. and Lula Irwin Maupin, who raised him; and a grandson David Paul Filaseta. He is survived by many cousins, including Patricia and Wilma Korb, whom he grew up with and loved like siblings.
Paul had a deep love for animals and nature. In one memorable moment, a young deer being chased by dogs leapt into his arms for safety—a testament to the peace he seemed to offer all creatures. He enjoyed traveling and camping, finding serenity in the outdoors. In their later years he and Carol offered lifelong love to exchange students they hosted from all over the world. A lover of storytelling, Paul treasured quiet time with a good book as much as writing his own life stories, sermons, and Christmas cards.
Rev. Paul Edwin Van Dine will be remembered for his steadfast faith and gentle spirit. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.”
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, January 30th at Union United Methodist Church, with burial in the church cemetery.
