COLUMBIA - Sara Elizabeth Kay “Buddie” Nicholson, a native of Fair Play and a longtime resident of Columbia and Chapin passed away on Sunday, October 17, 2021, at the age of 90. She was the only child of Murray and Kate D. Kay of Fair Play who preceded her in death.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at Chapin Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Nicholson will be laid to rest by her devoted husband, the late James Robert Nicholson, Jr., in Bush River Memorial Gardens. Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, is assisting the family.
Born and reared on the family farm in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Buddie left home at age 16 to attend Winthrop University in Rock Hill. She graduated with a B.S. degree in Home Economics in 1952 and became a Home Demonstration Agent in Anderson County. She and her husband were the first husband and wife team to work for the USDA on the Rural Development Program in Bamberg County. She later taught school at Townville, Clio and Seven Oaks Elementary in Lexington District Five until her retirement.
Survivors include her daughter, Susan Kay Nicholson and a son, James Robert Nicholson, III (Katie) and three step-grandchildren, Jessica, John, Derek and Madeline.
