A proud veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, Walt served honorably as an aircraft mechanic and instructor for the B-29 Superfortress. His commitment to service extended into civilian life, notably through his 41 years of sobriety in the AA community, where he profoundly impacted countless lives as a sponsor and mentor.
He cherished his family deeply, sharing his love for New Orleans through stories and his passion for cooking, especially his legendary multi-day red beans and rice and famous Saturday morning French toast. An avid writer, editor, and reader, he also found peace sailing the Caribbean and listening to the classical music stylings of Ludwig & Wolfgang.
Preceded in death by his mother, father, and sisters, Walt is survived by his wife, Laura Oliver; devoted sons, Matt & Scot Oliver; daughters-in-law, Courtney & Leah Oliver; grandchildren, Walter Luke Oliver V & Gwenith Oliver; and many that he considered to be his family.
A Celebration of Life service with full military honors will be held at the Dunbar Funeral Home in Irmo, SC on June 6th at 10:30 am, followed by interment at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Walt's memory to South Carolina Disabled Veterans, 92nd Buffalo Chapter 20, PO Box 24833, Columbia SC 29224.
