

Memorial service for Sgt. Major William Edgar Rigsby, (USA, Ret) 87, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 28, 2019 at St. Andrews Baptist Church. The family will greet friends following the service at the church. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 30, 2019 in Ft. Jackson National Cemetery. Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo, is assisting the family.
Sgt. Major Rigsby passed away Monday, July 22, 2019. Born in Proctorville, OH, he was a son of the late Clarence E. and Elizabeth Castle Rigsby. He was the husband of 65 years to Dapple Dean Rigsby. Mr. Rigsby was a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher, Member of Saints Alive, and Homebound visitation Committee at St. Andrews Baptist Church. He retired as Sgt. Major from the US Army where he proudly served in the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam War, and as Sgt. of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. While in the service, he was the recipient of the following: Guard, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Identification Badge; Combat Infantry Badge (2nd Award); Bronze Star Medal; Meritorious Service Medal with 1st Oak Leaf Cluster; Army Commendation Medal with 1st Oak Leaf Cluster; Presidential Unit Citation; Good Conduct Medal (4th award); National Defense Service Medal with 1st Oak Leaf Cluster; Korean Service Medal; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation Badge; United Nations Service Medal; Vietnam Campaign Medal; and Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm. He also was a member of the Kentucky Colonels.
Following his retirement from the US Army, Bill continued his career and later retired from the State of South Carolina. Bill was a caring neighbor and friend, eager to help in whatever capacity was needed by family, friends and all others. He volunteered his time and talents with Habitat for Humanity, Camp Kemo as well as Gideons International. He loved the community and was Grand Marshal for the 2018 Okra Strut.
Surviving in addition to his wife, are his daughters, Melanie Tidsworth (Mark), Laura Moore (Brian); grandchildren, Garrett Tidsworth, Erin Tidsworth, Cami Tidsworth, Megan Moore, and Kelly Moore. He is also survived by his brother, Clarence D. Rigsby (Linda) and sister, Shirley R. Dillon. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Hubert, Jack and James “Jimmy” Rigsby.
