Elton Irving Scott, of Jackson, passed away on February 2, 2020 at Henry Ford Allegiance surrounded by his family. Surviving is his wife of 65 years, Beverly Scott; children, Angela (Reginald) Taylor, David (Laurie) Scott, and Michael Scott; granddaughter-daughter, Kamari Scott; grandchildren, Malkia Chandler, Dominique Scott, Sasha Scott, and Kamron Wells; great-grandchildren, Zuron, Francisco, and Ezekiel. He is preceded in death by his parents, Reverend David and Nola Scott; 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Elton joined the U.S. Air Force in 1952. He worked from 1956 to 1987 for the Michigan Department of Corrections. While working in his early years he also attended Eastern Michigan University and received his bachelor’s degree. He was Chief Deputy Warden at Southern Michigan Prison during the May 1981 riots. In 1985, he was promoted to Warden at the G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility and tasked with the planning and construction of the prison. He retired after it was finished in November 1987. In 1972, he assisted in helping get the state lottery off the ground. “I’m never one to sit by quietly when something doesn’t sit right with me”, and in 1993 he ran and served on the school board for JPS and also was a member of the NAACP for several years making several changes. In 1995, he took a position as a Court Officer at the Jackson County District Court, as well. When his term on the school board expired in 1997 his plans were simple, enjoy life. He was a devoted husband, family man, and friend. He was an avid golfer, pilot, reader, and enjoyed spending winters in Las Vegas, watching Westerns on T.V. and talking! In recent years, his favorite place was the campground; sitting on the porch and watching the sunset. Mr. Scott has chosen to be cremated and there will be a celebration of his life held at Patience-Montgomery Funeral Home on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. until the time of service. Followed by Military Honors.
